The Codex 5278 is a German compilation manuscript created some time after 1428,[1] consisting of a war book and a sketchbook. The original currently rests in the holdings of the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna, Austria. The text is a compilation consisting of Konrad Kyeser's famous Kriegsbuch Bellifortis and what seems to be an excerpt from Fiore de'i Liberi's treatise Fior di Battaglia. The excerpt from the Flower of Battle doesn't contain any text, and includes material on grappling and dueling in armor not generally associated with the Liberi tradition; it is quite similar in scope and content to Ludwig VI von Eyb's treatise of the following century. These facts suggest that the treatise is not based on that of Liberi, but rather is an independent testament to the Germanic tradition in which Liberi was trained.

Only the recto pages of the manuscript contain content.

Unfortunately, only ff 174r - 190r and 196r are currently available for study. The contents of the missing pages listed below are purely speculative. Because of the considerable overlap between this treatise and that of Ludwig VI von Eyb, its content is laid out on that master's page.
