The Nuremberg Turnierbuch (or Album of Tournaments and Parades in Nuremberg; MS 22.229) is a German tournament book covering various periods between the mid 16th and mid 17th centuries. The original currently rests in the holdings of Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, NY. The Met divides this manuscript into five separate parts; the first is a copy of the tournament book of Hans Burgkmair der Jüngere, while the other four describe various tournaments and parades held in the city of Nuremberg. It may have been created for the Volckamer family, given the prominence of the exploits of Berthold Volckamer on, e.g., folio 22r.
Provenance
The known provenance of the Nuremberg Turnierbuch is:
- Created in several stages during the 16th and 17th centuries, possibly copied from older records; the paper dates to the 1530s, while the fourth section describes a parade that occured in 1640. The current binding is typical of the late 16th to mid 17th centuries, and all contents seem to have been bound at the same time.
- 19th century - binding rebacked.
- before 1890 - owned by Frédéric Spitzer (1815–1890)
- 1922-present - held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, New York
