Whosoever would like a thorough report
on the fencer's art and it's origins
+
Of the fencing art and it’s beginnings
He who reads diligently this Treatise
+
They should read this treatise diligently
because herein it has a fine record
+
Because within contains a beautiful account
as to who has started the Fencing Arts
+
Of who began this fencing art
Also it's inception and how long ago
+
And also how it was granted Freedom,
such Fencing art has been conceived
+
and how long ago this art was founded
all that is written herein, and who diligently reads
+
It all lies within for those who would studiously read it
will also be very surprised
+
One will also wonder
at what Great honors fencing brings
+
At how this fencing art brings the greatest honor
Because the fencing Arts, will be praised
+
Because fencing art is held
by great Men and will bring to you Honor
+
in esteem by great lords
Then he who can fence well
+
That which the fencer is most capable of
may thereof provide well for himself
+
They can get enjoyment from
he can with great potentates
+
Through this, from great Potentates
thereby receive the greatest of Graces</poem>

Your most Gracious Sir

So that I may go into what concerns the fencer’s art in this little treatise (which is of use to Emperor, King, Dukes, and lords as well as all those that would exercise their art for the means of their subsistence) I have brought into print and had published this, which has not been created without great need. Rather, as stated, those great Lords and Potentates honor and have need for this Chivalric art. So much so that several Emperors have graced it with Privileges and Freedoms, making possible that this Chivalric art might be taught by the Brotherhood of St. Mark (to the exclusion of the Federfechter) in their public home beside the mighty Lion. Because I know that Your Grace practices this Chivalric art in his own court with his own fencers, I have put this short treatise (as well as a song, attached) into print, which includes the whole foundation of the praiseworthy fencing art, in order to honor Your Grace. It is therefore my humblest hope that Your Grace will like and approve of this small treatise (as I bid him to do), because, Your Grace, I can do nothing better to honor you. That I would be, and remain in, Your Grace kind favor. May Your Grace command under God’s ward and protection. Attested in Dresden, the 1st of July, 1589.

|
'''The Tale of Fencing'''

+

+

Once, I went walking out abroad
+
On along the flat fields, and saw off to the side
+
A handsome young man walking the other way
+
He asked me: Might I also wander
+
On that same path that I was on?
+
I then started, and greeted him
+
He thanked me modestly
+
Soon, he approached me on the road
+
Then I asked him where he was going
+
And likewise that he should tell me

He spoke: I want to go to the River Main
+
Get myself freely on over to Frankfurt
+
Because for the longest time, I’ve wanted to be
+
Master of the Long Sword
+
And likewise also to soon win honor
+
With all of the fencer’s defenses.

Then I said, “Yes, you are going the right way
Stay on this path, it’s not a bad one at all.
It will bring you to that place
+
Lead you on into the city
Which is called Frankfurt am Main.”

I walked with him for a good stretch
+
The young man spoke boldly and well
+
Then I had occasion to ask him
+
And bid him tell me
+
Where that fencing art came from,
+
And its origins, besides
+
That has from my youth carried favor for me
+
The young man did say to me:
+
“Yes, if I should handle my affairs
+
I would want to give you a fine account
+
Of who founded the fencing art
+
But I fear, I’ve come too late
+
To get into Frankfurt (I don't have time)
+
I’m thinking, that the way is quite long
+
If I miss the Trade Fair (Messe) now
+
Then I would completely forget
+
And would have to wait an entire year
+
That I now say to you truthfully”

I told him then that I had some advice
I can gladly take you with
+
Stay at my home tonight, that’s my wish
+
Yes it is certain
That I am able to do this"

I said, without any mockery:
+
“As our dear God has let me live
+
So surely I will travel there tomorrow
+
Just come on over to my place
+
In the name of God, let it happen
+
I would go on in with you now
+
Be welcome in my house
+
Just lay down your things and change your clothes
+
I ought to give you a basin of water
+
And also a little to eat besides”
+
“Host, sir, spare yourself the trouble
+
I thank you for giving me lodging here”
+
“Eat freely and don’t trouble yourself
+
You may trust me completely
+
Tomorrow we will want to speak further
+
On fencers and how they should conduct themselves

The Chivalric fencing art arose
+
And has its origins
+
Way back when Troy was burned
+
Some eleven hundred years ago
+
Before the birth of Christ
+
It was invented by Hercules
+
And with it came the Olympic Battle
+
In the land of Arcadia
+
At Olympus, that high mountain
+
In this Chivalric feat
+
Heroes fought unarmored on horseback
+
As Herodotus tells us

|
Those that fought in a Knightly way
+
And beat down others with their swords
+
They were awarded well
+
By the olive tree, with a beautiful wreath
+
In battle Hercules won
+
Great praise and awards with hero’s courage
+
Then came the order in the fifth year
+
To stop the battle altogether
+
With great glory once and for all
+
To this Olympic host and this era
+
The Greeks held in high regard
+
As Polydorus’ account recalls
+
However when Hercules died
+
This Olympic battle was died out
+
So that for an age
+
In Greece it was no longer held
+
However Iphitus had his son
+
Who would revive it
+
Indeed, exactly as it was formerly
+
After Troy was destroyed
+
It would be carried on for a long time in Greece
+
As Solinus describes to us
+
Afterwards also in the Greek lands
+
Many diverse combat games were created

+
The armed tournament on horseback
+
And how one should ride well
+
That was called the Pyrrhic Ride in former days
+
When one fought for a wreath
+
Won fame and wealth, power and glory
+
And also from that came the combat games
+
In the mighty city of Rome
+
When Staurus build a theater
+
Within, the people watched fights
+
Separated out on marble columns
+
Three hundred sixty in their number
+
This would be called the greatest of works
+
Ever made by human hands
+
Within with great grandeur
+
Those combat games were held for a long time
+
And often in just one of these fights
+
Were combatants in their thousands of pairs
+
They all fought with sharp weapons
+
Cutting, thrusting, and throwing one another
+
With swords, maces, spear, and arrow
+
They all had a shield as well
+
To protect them in their need
+
Many remained dead on that battlefield

With wild horses and with bears
These battles did not end without injury
In the time of Emperor Tiberius
That a theater collapsed
That the Fencing Art must be honored
When I would henceforth not be too old
Shields, helmets, which we still have
|
Here follows the song of
+
the Chivalric fencing art, it’s origins
+
foundations, and provisions
+
of total secrecy.

+
+

Set to Hen-Wise Wolfram
+
or Benzenauer’s tune

+
+

Of Chivalric Arts, I will begin
+
to sing with a fencer’s favor as I’ve
+
learned it. I ask all of you Masters:
+
you will rightly understand me, and may you not
+
take displeasure with what I’ve said.
+
My sword I have lofted in
+
masterful artfulness: I cut below or above,
+
I move in the correct fashion, and I also want to test you
+
With thorough mastery employing Weak and Strong
+
in the strength of the rightful Art.
+
WHO would show courage in fencing, let him
+
take sword in hand. The word Instantly (In des)
+
cuts keenly, that is well known, and who scares
+
easily, this is my best advice: he should
+
never learn fencing. There will be trouble otherwise.
+
Now note the word Instantly (In des), upon
+
which all Art relies. The Wrath Cut (Zornhaw)- It goes with the point nimbly

+
|
Nun folget der Gesang der
+
Ritterlich”en Fechtkunst / ihren Vr-
+
sprung / Fundament, vnd begriff
+
aller heimeligkeit.

+

VOn Ritterlichen Künsten / so wil ich heben
an / Singen mit der Fechter günste wie ichs
+
Gelernet han / Bitt auch ihr Meister alle / Ihr
Nun merckt (in des) das Worte / da alle
|
from the long edge. With golden Art I execute
+
the Winging (Flügel) into the hanging point. Don’t remain
+
in the Triangle. Don’t anticipate the Buffalo (Püffel).
+
With that you should also note the two things: Before
+
and After, as well as Weak and Strong. With Running In
+
you should not be too reckless. Your sword in both hands,
+
don’t forsake the Tag-Hits. Execute the techniques nimbly
+
and you will find his openings.
+
Scalp Cut, the artful point. The Squint Cut
+
does not run through, and the Iron Gate. Onwards
+
we go so pay attention. If you want to leave
+
with the Master’s wreath, four guards you must have.
+
They also belong to the dance.
+
I’d like to name them for you now so that you will
+
be informed: Ox (Ochs), Fool (Alber), Plow (Pflug) get to know them.
+
From the Roof (Von Dach) also don’t dispense with. From these four
+
you should fence and hold to them alone. This way you
+
have the correct ones and keep them as standard.
+
Four are the Displacements and four openings
+
on the man. The four injure greatly. One technique
+
is called the Crown (Kron). If you want to drive it away, take the
+
edge in front of the hand. The Crown (Kron) should remain for long,
+
since you are well aware of the Slice.
+
The Crooked Cut (Krumphaw) is still behind us. The Thwart (zwerch)
+
and also the slice. Learn to seek with the Doubling (Duplieren).

With feints (fehler) I advise you, use the Hangings (hengen)
with your guards. The Speaking Window quickly, Winding In (einwinden)
is good too. Displace (absetze) his sword with your shield
+
from both sides. Travel After (Nach reisen) also injures well
+
so that your opponent becomes meek.
+
If one would ask further who
+
penned this, you can tell him
+
his name is Paulus Roth. The song
+
he sends as a gift for fencers’ cheerfulness.
+
Dedicated to Christoff Rösener, who took it from him well.
+
He should keep everything in mind what is contained
+
in the Art. He would like to have his head broken
+
He likes to drink wine. He asks the noble fencers
+
if they don’t want trouble from him, or whether
he has not done wrong, since he can’t write poetry.
