Fechtkunst aus dem Italienischen ("The Art of Fencing, from the Italian"; MS Dresden C.94a) is an anonymous German translation of Salvator Fabris' 1606 fencing manual Scienza d’Arme,[1] probably created before 1635.[citation needed] The original currently rests in the holdings of the Sächsische Landesbibliothek in Dresden, Germany. This is one of four known 17th century German translations of Fabris' work, and includes sketches of all of the original illustrations.

Unfortunately, this manuscript was improperly stored during World War II and suffered extensive water damage, rendering parts of it almost illegible.

Provenance

The manuscript contains two names that may indicate possible previous owners (possibly including the translator): on the first page "Melchior of Schwalbach" and on the inside cover plates "Ludov Rudolph Senft à Pilsach".[1]

Before its acquisition by a predecessor of the Sächsische Landesbibliothek, it was owned by the Bibliotheca Senftiana (as MS (a) 87.) and K. Sächs. Engraving Gallery (Biblioth. Archive Vol 312 Bl 53).[1]
