Lo Schermo ("On Defense") is an Italian fencing manual written by Angelo Viggiani dal Montone and published by his brother Battista in 1575. It treats the use of the side sword after the Bolognese fashion.

Publication History

According to the preface, the Viggiani's dying wish to his brother was that his treatise not be published for at least fifteen years. Thus, though it was completed in 1551, the first edition wasn't printed until 1575, when it was published in Venice, Italy by Giorgio Angelieri. A second edition was published in Bologna in 1588 by Zachara Cavalcabo.

A presentation manuscript also exists, the Codex 10723, which was completed in 1567 and gifted to Maximilian II (1527-1576).
