The MS Chart.A.558 is a German fencing manual created in ca. 1448 and often attributed to Hans Talhoffer.[1] The original currently rests in the holdings of the Universitäts- und Forschungsbibliothek Erfurt/Gotha in Gotha, Germany. It is believed that Talhoffer put it to personal use as a visual aid for his students.
This is the earliest of the five manuscripts attributed to Talhoffer, and unlike the others, his level of involvement is unclear; his owner's mark appears on folio 1r, but that could mean that he purchased the manuscript in a finished (or partially-finished) state rather than contributing to its contents. The charge on the shield on folio 28r matches his presumptive heraldry on folio 102r of MS Thott.290.2º (1459), but on the other hand, the escutcheon and the mantling are quite different between the two.
