The MS Chart.A.558 is a German fencing manual compiled in or after 1448 and often attributed to Hans Talhoffer.[1] The original currently rests in the holdings of the Universitäts- und Forschungsbibliothek Erfurt/Gotha in Gotha, Germany. It is believed that Talhoffer put it to personal use as a visual aid for his students.
This is the earliest of the five manuscripts attributed to Talhoffer, and unlike the others, his level of involvement is unclear; his effaced owner's mark appears on folio 1r, but that could mean that he purchased the manuscript in a finished (or partially-finished) state rather than contributing to its contents. The charge on the shield on folio 28r matches his presumptive heraldry on folio 102r of MS Thott.290.2º (HTKo; 1459), but on the other hand, the escutcheon and the mantling are quite different between the two.[2]
