De Dignoscendis Hominibus ("On the Discernments of Man") is a Spanish fencing manual by Pedro Monte, written in Latin and printed in Milan in 1492.[1] It is potentially the first treatise on martial arts ever published (depending on the exact publication date of Das Landshuter Ringerbuch). Sydney Anglo states that "Monte's treatment [of wrestling] could scarcely have been more unusual for, although there were earlier manuals of wrestling, no one had attempted to analyse the general principles underlying unarmed combat—one of the tasks Monte set himself."[2]
