	AV ROY. SIRE. Je n'aurois jamais ose presenter cet Ouvrage à VOSTRE MAJESTE', si l'accüeil favorable qu'elle fait à tous ceux qui soccupent pour le bien public ne m'en avoit donne la liberté. Je craignois que tout ce que mon travail peut avoir de beau & d'éclatant ne s'évanoüist à la veuë des lumieres de vostre esprit , & que tout ce que le mien pourroit produire de meilleur ne fut pas digne du moindre de vos regards , mais quand	TO THE KING. SIRE. I would have never dared to present this book to YOUR MAJESTY, if the favorable welcome with whom She meets all who care for the common good had not given me that freedom. I feared everything in my work which may be beautiful or outstanding fades in the lights of your spirit, & that the best that mine could produce would not be worthy of the smallest of your glance, however when

J'ay cru que lors que tous le monde s'efforçoit de seconder les intentions de VOSTRE MAJESTE', je ne devois pas cacher les connoissances que mes reflexions & une experience de trente-cing années m'ont acquises , & que dans le temps que toutes les Sciences & tous les Arts fleurissent sous vostre royale protection , l'exercice de l'Espée n'estoit pas indigne de la mesme grace. En effet , SIRE, VOSTRE MAJESTE' a trop bien sceu rendre ses Armes redoutables à tous ses Voisins , pour ne pas connoi- tre l'importance du mestier qui donne les moyens de s'en bien servirs;	I have seen that the great & sublime genie of YOUR MAJESTY is not only determined to extend the borders of France, & to draw plans which hold the whole of Europe in suspens, but that he also deigned to know and favor the inventions which may contribute to the glory of their State & the utility of their subjects. I resolved that when everyone efforces themselves to second the designs of YOUR MAJESTY, I should not hide the knowledge which my reflexions & a thirty-five year long experience granted me, & that as all Sciences & all Arts blossom under your royal protection, the usage of the Sword is not unworthy of the same grace. Indeed, SIRE, YOUR MAJESTY has known how to make their weapons fearsome to all their neighbors way too much, not to know the importance of the trade which gives the mean of using them well;
	Elle sçait que la valeur est inutile sans Armes , & que les Armes sans adresse nuisent plus souvent qu'elles ne servent. Il faut que sous le plus grand Roy du monde la plus belliqueuse Nation de la terre de- vienne aussi la plus adroite & la mieux disciplinée ; & que comme elle a esté particulierement favorisée de la nature dans le temperament & la disposition du corps , elle n'excelle pas moins dans l'Art & dans la connoissance de l'Escrime. Il sembloit autrefois que cet Exercice eust quelque chose de funeste , & l'on rendoit coupable d'une partie du sang qui se répandois mal à propos dans ce Royaume pour des que relles particulieres. Mais à present , SIRE, que par le bon ordre que VOSTRE MAJESTE' y a mis , tous ses Sujets sont presque asseurez de n'employer leur adresse que pour le bien de l'Estat , ou pour la con- servation de leur vie ; ce qui doit estre le seul but d'un homme verita-	She knows that valor is useless without Weapons, & and that Weapons without dexterity harm more often than they help. Under the greatest King of the world the most belligerent Nation of the earth should also become the most skilled and the most disciplined ; & that as it has been particularly favored by nature in temperament and disposition of the body, it should not excel less in the the Art & the knowledge of fencing. It once seemed that this exercise held something sinister, & were held guilty of some of the blood which was unduly spilled in this Kingdom because of personal quarrels. But now, SIRE, that thanks to the good order that YOUR MAJESTY established there, all of her Subjects are almost certain of only ever using their dexterity for the good of the State, or for the conservation of their life ; which should be the only goal of a truly generous man.

J'ay lieu de croire que mon dessein aura l'appro- bation de tout le monde : On a fait en France & chez les Estrangers plusieurs Ouvrages sur le mesme sujet ; mais comme le mien ne leur resemble en rien , & qu'il a , si je me me trompe , un ordre , une clarté, & des recherches qui ne se trouvent dans pas un des autres , j'espere qu'il ne sera pas des-agreable à VOSTRE MAJESTE'. Je serois au comble de mes souhaits s'il pouvoit contribuer à l'instruction de ce Jeune Prince qui doit un jour la seconder dans l'execution de ses glo- rieux projets ; mais quoy qu'il en soit , je seray trop heureux si mon travail me peut servir à faire connoistre à VOSTRE MAJESTE' le ze- le & la passion que j'ay pour sa gloire , & avec quel respect je suis, SIRE, Son tres-humble , tres-obeissant, & tres-fidele serviteur & sujet, LA TOUCHE.	I have grounds to believe that my design will meet the approbation of everyone : Several work on the same topic were made in France & abroad ; but as my own looks nothing like them, & that it possesses, unless I am mistaken, an order, a clarity, & researches which are found in none of the others, I hope it will not be unpleasant to YOUR MAJESTY. My wishes would be entirely fulfilled if it could contribute to the instruction of this Young Prince which must one day second her in the execution of her glorious projects ; but be that as it may, I would only be too happy if my work can help me to make known to YOUR MAJESTY the zeal & the passion which I have for her glory, & with which respect I am, SIRE, her very humble, very obedient, & very faithful servant and subject, LA TOUCHE.
