James commenced HEMA in 2005 with Melbourne Swordplay Guild and he commenced instructing Liechtenauer long sword in 2013 through Melbourne Swordplay Guild. In 2015, in concert with other fencers with a primary focus on Liechtenauer's long sword, he formed Fechtschule Victoria, where he has been and continues to be the head instructor for long sword. He has presented at a number of Australian conventions, on various topics covered in the 15th Century glosses. James has been working on a principles based interpretation of Liechtenauer's long sword, which he hopes to release in 2020.
