The Tale of Fencing
Once, I went walking out abroad
On along the flat fields, and saw off to the side
A handsome young man walking the other way
He asked me: Might I also wander
On that same path that I was on?
I then started, and greeted him
He thanked me modestly
Soon, he approached me on the road
Then I asked him where he was going
And likewise that he should tell me
He spoke: I want to go to the River Main
Get myself freely on over to Frankfurt
Because for the longest time, I’ve wanted to be
Master of the Long Sword
And likewise also to soon win honor
With all of the fencer’s defenses.
Then I said, “Yes, you are going the right way
Stay on this path, it’s not a bad one at all.
It will bring you to that place
Lead you on into the city
Which is called Frankfurt am Main.”

Bericht vom Fechten.
Eins mals gieng ich spazieren weit/
Ins ebne Feldt / vnd sah zur seidt/
Ein hübschen Jüngling her spatzieren/
Der fraget mich: Kan ich auch irrn:
Auff diesem Weg/ da ich jetzt bin:
Da fieng ich an / vnd grüsset ihn:
Er dancket mir züchtiger massn/
Balt trat er zu mir an die strassn.
Da fragt ich ihn / wo er hin wolt/
Dasselb er mich berichten solt.
Er sprach: Ich wil hin an den Meyn/
Mich zu Franckfurt da lassen freyn.
Denn ich vor lengest hab begert /
Meister zu sein im langen Schwerdt.
Auch sunst in aller Fechter Wehrn /
Denn dadurch komm ich bald zu Ehrn,
Da sagt ich / Ja ihr geht hie recht/
Bleibt auff dem Weg/ er ist gar schlecht/
Der wird euch bringen an den orth/
Da ihr hin wolt/ geht immer forth.
Er fürt euch in die Stad hinein/
Welch ihr genandt/ Franckfurt am Mayn.

It was invented by Hercules
And with it came the Olympic Battle
In the land of Arcadia
At Olympus, that high mountain
In this Chivalric feat
Heroes fought unarmored on horseback
As Herodotus tells us

In battle Hercules won
Great praise and awards with hero’s courage
Then came the order in the fifth year
To stop the battle altogether
With great glory once and for all

The Greeks held in high regard
As Polydorus’ account recalls
However when Hercules died
This Olympic battle was died out
So that for an age
In Greece it was no longer held
However Iphitus had his son
Who would revive it
Indeed, exactly as it was formerly
After Troy was destroyed
