− | Peter Falkner (Peter Faulkner, Petter Falckner) was a century::15th century nationality::German [[fencing master | + | Peter Falkner (Peter Faulkner, Petter Falckner) was a century::15th century nationality::German fencing master. His early life is uncertain, but he was certified as a Master of the Long Sword by the Marxbrüder in Frankfurt-am-Main some time before 1491. Falkner was a witness of record to the guild's biannual treasury accounting in 1496, a task he performed again in 1506. In 1502, he was elected as Captain (Hauptman) of the guild, and he seems to have served an unusual three consecutive terms. |
+ | |||
+ | In the 1490s, Falkner seems to have produced at least two manuscript fencing manuals (becoming the first member of the Brotherhood of Saint Mark to do so, unless Hans Talhoffer were also a member). Sadly, only the shorter of the two manuscripts, Kunste Zu Ritterlicher Were (MS KK5012), survives. This fully-illustrated manuscript includes a sword section is based on Liechtenauer's Recital and a messer section based on that of Johannes Lecküchner (though in both cases with considerable alteration and elaboration by Falkner, and several short sections on other weapons which appear to be entirely original.
+ | |||
+ | The longer of the two manuscripts, known as the Falkner Turnierbuch, seems to have been destroyed by Prussian bombardment during the Siege of Strasbourg in 1870. What little we know about its contents comes from records made before this time, which seem to indicate a manuscript of at least 111 folia containing an anthology of treatises by other masters of the Liechtenauer tradition, as well as a few works of unknown origin. There is also a possible third Falkner manuscript, the apparently-anonymous MS Cl. 23842, whose illustrations bear a strong resemblance to the artwork in KK5012 and which seems to even directly allude to it.
− | + | Falkner's artwork resembles to some extent the earlier treatises of Paulus Kal, which may have been his inspiration, and his art seem in turn to have influenced Jörg Wilhalm (especially if he created Cl. 23842).

Thus, go help the right hand with the left hand, or grasp him by the helmet. That is good.

− | + | Note that this is a particularly good piece. If he canters close to you and wishes to work with you and fall on you around the neck, so seize his right hand with your left and go with your right arm over his and seize the saddle tree. This is named the seizing of the forelock. Or grab in with your right hand between his hands on the bridle and pull it over him. Hereby, he falls with the horse and with shame.

Peter Falkner (Peter Faulkner, Petter Falckner) was a 15th century German fencing master. His early life is uncertain, but he was certified as a Master of the Long Sword by the Marxbrüder in Frankfurt-am-Main some time before 1491.[1] Falkner was a witness of record to the guild's biannual treasury accounting in 1496, a task he performed again in 1506.[1] In 1502, he was elected as Captain (Hauptman) of the guild, and he seems to have served an unusual three consecutive terms.[1][2]
In the 1490s, Falkner seems to have produced at least two manuscript fencing manuals (becoming the first member of the Brotherhood of Saint Mark to do so, unless Hans Talhoffer were also a member). Sadly, only the shorter of the two manuscripts, Kunste Zu Ritterlicher Were (MS KK5012),[3] survives. This fully-illustrated manuscript includes a sword section is based on Liechtenauer's Recital and a messer section based on that of Johannes Lecküchner (though in both cases with considerable alteration and elaboration by Falkner, and several short sections on other weapons which appear to be entirely original.
The longer of the two manuscripts, known as the Falkner Turnierbuch, seems to have been destroyed by Prussian bombardment during the Siege of Strasbourg in 1870. 23842, whose illustrations bear a strong resemblance to the artwork in KK5012 and which seems to even directly allude to it.[4]
Falkner's artwork resembles to some extent the earlier treatises of Paulus Kal, which may have been his inspiration, and his art seem in turn to have influenced Jörg Wilhalm (especially if he created Cl. 23842).

Here begins the dagger fencing in armour. If you want to be covered so that he falls, so you tear him large pieces of his tunic and thrust him in his visor with the dagger. Then see that he doesn’t succeed to act freely, as strong as he stand. Thus, one gain over him a great advantage. |
Item, if he thrusts you from above, then displace him with your left arm and with the right hand thrust him to the face. If he displaces also your thrust, so jerk strongly to you. Then, he thrusts in again, so displace high and take the dagger out. |
Item, if he thrusts again from above, then catch his hand with your hand and with the other that holds the dagger strike him alike on his right arm and pull toward you. This is named a taking of the dagger and that is good. |
Item, if he directs a long thrust at you, so go with your dagger under through at his hand and, with the left hand forward, go around his neck and throw him over the left leg. That is good. |
Item, if he thrusts you from above, so grab on the dagger with your left hand and, thus armed, displace him the thrust and turn him the dagger out. That is named the high shield. That is also good. |
Item, if he thrusts again from above, so displace him with the left hand and with the right hand grab him under through his right leg and, with the head through his arm pit, lift him over you. Thus, you throw him on the ground. This is made with empty hands. |
Item, if he thrusts you again from above, lay your dagger on your left arm so that the point goes over you, and trap his hand and dagger, [and] pull toward the ground. That is names the scissors. |
Item, if he thrusts you again from above, so displace him with the right arm and catch him his hand. With the left hand pull his right elbow under your chest and throw him over the leg. That is named the unnamable. |
Item, another piece, if he thrusts from above, so lay your dagger on the right arm so that the point stand behind you, then he thrusts at you, so displace him the thrust with the dagger and grab with the left hand over his right on the arm and press behind him. That is named the key [in] wrestling with the dagger. |
Item, if he thrusts from bellow, so fall in with your dagger over his and with the left hand grasp him his right [hand] and pull at you. Thus, you take him the dagger and [he] thrusts himself therein. That is good. |
Item, if he thrusts you again from bellow, so fall in also over the dagger with yours and grab with the left hand both daggers and with the right hand rotate under through over him. Thus, you take him the dagger. That is named the low shield. |
Another good masterpiece with the dagger. If he has a dagger and you none, and [he] thrusts you from bellow, so displace him well with your left hand on his right arm and pull him the hand behind and take him his dagger and hold him thusly firmly, or direct [him] where you want. That is named carrying out. |
Item, another piece, if he has a dagger and you none, then he thrusts from bellow, so grab him whis right hand with both hands and pull it over your right shoulder. That is named a projection or a arm break. |
Item, if you have a dagger and he also one and thrusts you from above on the head, so project yourself with your head under through on his chest and thrust him with the inversed dagger behind around his leg or through both and pull at you. Thus he falls on the ground. That is good. |
Item, if you have a dagger and he also, and [you] thrust at him, then he takes you your dagger, so step away from him like in sword. He then thrusts at you from above, so displace him with the left hand and with the head, run in through his right arm and with your right hand grasp him his leg and lift him over you. Thus you throw him. |
Item, another piece. If he thrusts you from above with the dagger, so displace him with the left hand high and with the right hit him the dagger around his throat and pull at you or grab with your left on your dagger and press him in the nape of the neck. |
Item, if he thrusts you from above, so displace him again with the left hand high and hit him with the dagger in the articulation of his right arm. Thus you break him the arm or take him the dagger. That is good. |
Item, another good piece in the wrestling. If he has a dagger and you none and he thrusts you from bellow, so fall on him with your right hand on his right and jump behind him with your left foot and with the right hand grasp him his left leg in the knee pit and with the left hand in front around his belly. That is good. |
Item, another piece. If he has a dagger and you non, he thrusts at you, so displace him with your left hand and with your right grab him under on his elbow and pull at you. That is also good. |
Another piece. If he has one dagger in each hand and that you want to bring him where you want so he can’t thrust you, so grasp him through his arm when standing behind and press him on his neck with both hands and lift him over you. Thus, he can’t not thrust you |
Item, another piece. If you have a dagger and he has one too, when he thrusts at you, so displace him the thrust and take him the dagger. Then, he waits after your thrust and he would also like to take yours, so make a feint thrust and throw him on the ground and fall him on his body. Then he hit you with a foot around the neck, so raise the other firmly and work him to the face with the dagger. That is good. |

Mark what I depict in the staff, then be quick in winding and lifting up, fencing and laying low, crashing down forget not. Five hews make with falling over and winding out. Hew, stab also learn to find. That is the text, here follows after. |
||
Will you make the four on-bindings together, you shall seek when you lie before him in the changing hew, and he runs with the point from below on to the breast, then run against him there, also with the point. If he then strikes above with the other point, then strike also with the other there-against, so may he not injure you. |
Yet a technique, that is called the running over When he has bound on your staff, then fall in above over his right shoulder on the neck with the point, he will then set off the point with the other point of his staff, then quickly strike with your other point in to the head, or thrust him in the breast.[20] |
Yet a technique far from the man. If he drives a strike or thrust on you to the face or breast, then displace his strike or stab, and take a thrust or strike against him to the head or to his leg. |
Mark, yet a technique. When he quickly binds on you, and you [bind on] against him from above, then grasp his staff to yours and press his fingers, then he must let you take the staff, this is called the clamping. |
||
Yet a technique that is called the winding over with both points. Whenever you fall over with a point on the neck, then you shall wind out with the other point, if he falls against with the other [point] on the other side of the neck, then do not leave, thrust him between the hands to the throat or face. |
||
Mark this is an especially good technique in the staff and is called the running under. When you have a staff and if he then strikes to you, to the leg or body, then run off with your back point on your right side from below after the strike, and fall with the left arm high over his breast, and with the left foot behind his, then you throw him down. |

This is a further lesson as you are to avail yourself of the weapons for the judicial combat, namely the murder axe and the halberd. Also this belongs to the judicial combat: Strikes, blows, wrestling counters. This is now the text |
If you have a murder axe or a halberd in the hand and he likewise, so hold it straight across on the legs, so that the left foot is forward and the point shows in the face. If he strikes then from above to you or if he leads a thrust, then drive with your displacement. Seize then, as you know well, with that pushing (?) end. |
A further piece: If he strikes you high to the head, drive high with an armored hand and displace the strike. If he wants to wrench, you are to lead the strike or the point in the face. If this does not succeed, pass under it appropriately with wrestling. |
A further piece: If you are in the lower stance and he is in the upper and if he leads a fast stroke to you, then step forward with your right foot. Go with the rear point rapidly from low to high, and catch the blow. Wind to him the blade of your halberd in front to the neck, and throw him over the left leg. Attack him in the face. This is a piece which makes an end. |
Note, this piece is plain and simple: If you have a halberd and he likewise and if he opposes you with pulled weapon in order to strike you, then stand also with the halberd pressed to your body. If it strikes above or below, displace the strike and turn away his halberd with yours, or thrust him to the face; that is good. |
A further piece: If he wants to throw you over the left foot and if he put the pollaxe to you to the neck, then drive to him with your halberd behind his elbows, so that the lower end comes upward. Push it above you. Thus you refuse him the throw. |
Note, this is one of the very best pieces with the Halberd: If you both stand and neither of you wants to strike the first blow, prepare an enormous stroke. If he then goes with the displacement, twitch the stroke, and push him to the body or to the face. This he cannot counter well, and it is effective. |

Note that this is the Frankish combat. Well prepared, the shield, mace and dagger neutralize. |
That is the text. If you have a shield and a mace and him also, and that you should tread together, so hold your shield straight in front of you. If he cast his mace, so step close to him and strike him at his hands. He must let the shield away. That was good. |
Another piece with the longshield and the mace. If he has broken or casted his mace, then cast also yours right away and follow closely the throw and thrust him with your point between his shield and his left arm to the body or bring him away from his shield.
Another piece. If he has brought you away from the shield and the mace, be very prudent with the dagger. If he points strongly at you with the shield, displace with the dagger and allow yourself to be gained. If he pulls the shield at him, jump right away behind you. If he points again strongly at you, you must also bring him away from his shield. |
If you want to end the combat and you both have in the hand, so you must present him a thrust, let yourself to be gained merrily. Then, he displaces the thrust and takes [your] balance by the elbow. Take [it] back and neutralize him as you well know. |

Here begins the equestrian art of master Peter Falkner. At first with the lance, afterwards with the sword and with wrestling. This is the text of a general lesson to equestrian [art]. |
This is the first guard. Position yourself with your lance under the right arm. If he canters towards you with his [lance], so let it sink forward, change through under. Thereby you meet [him] and he doesn’t. |
This is the second guard. When you canter towards him, and him towards you with the long lance, so lay yours on the left arm, so that the iron hang under you on the left side, and slash up strongly on his [lance] and with that [yours] goes in the lance rest. Thereby you meet [him] and he doesn’t. That is with the short lance against the long. |
The third guard. If he canters towards you with the long lance, so canter also towards him and when you come precisely at him, then let your lance fall out the rest with the shaft to the ground, and hold him the iron on his lance and displace him with that. Thereby you meet him and he doesn’t |
The fourth guard. If you have come with the lance and have drawn your sword, then he canters towards you with the long lance, so lay your sword forward on the horse’s neck and displace him with that and hold him the point to the visage. This is good. |
Note that this is another piece with the long lance. If you are fleeing, the [lance] being on the rest or else, so lay the lance on the left shoulder and flee away. If he canters after you and want to plant you in the back, so wind yourself on your left side against him and meet him with [your lance]. |
Here begins the equestrian art with the sword. If you want to fence masterly with it, so you should, before all things, know three guards. |
The first guard here. Lay your sword on the left arm. If he strikes an upper strike on you to the head, so go on high and displace him the stroke. If he then strikes to the face, so set him off with the long edge on his sword from your left side. |
The second guard. Hold your sword close to your right side. If he then strikes or thrusts at you, so thrust from bellow against him to the face and fall on him with the crossguard high over his hand, wind through with the sword and ride forward. Hereby you take him the sword. |
The third guard. If he thrusts you to the face, so thrust against him to the face and fall high on him with the pommel and [with your] hand over his hand and wind him the sword around and go for the neck. Hereby you throw him downward. |
Note that this is a good [piece of] wrestling and named the key of wrestling or pointing the sun. If he comes with his right side at your left, and falls on you around the neck, so hit from the inside over his arm, or from the outside. Thus, go help the right hand with the left hand, or grasp him by the helmet. That is good. |
Note that this is a particularly good piece. |
If he has been forced down or fallen, so fall also down from the horse and work quickly in wrestling as you know well. If then he falls on the back, so trap him with a leg, with the other one on an arm and work with the sword or dagger. Hereby, he surrenders. |
